Cloudy with a chance of Kohlrabi
When I was given this assignment, I had no clue what ‘kohlrabi’ was, and importantly I was stuck on how vegetable can be seen humourous. Then I started to search up on its looks. When I was skimming through Google image, I saw kohlrabi with a face given to it. Then I was given an idea that I should approach this project through kid’s eye level. What is vegetable to children? Some think that eating green vegetable is the end of the world. First, it has unappealing appearance and they just think that all vegetable have bad taste. Using this idea, I decided to appeal kohlrabi in a friendly way so that kids can easily approach to it. There will be a question on the fact that it’s not children who are buying grocery, but it’s their parents who do so. That is true, but when children go on shopping with their parents, nobody can win over their children’s obsession on getting what they want. And these objects often are related to TV show, something that bring them entertainment.
While thinking about how to make it entertaining and being able to approach to the audience more easily, I came up with an idea of making parody of medias that kids are used to. I came across two ideas of switching meatballs from ‘cloudy with a chance of meatballs’ and using kohlrabi in the ‘universal studio’ sphere logo. With the second idea, I thought about vegetable amusement park advertisement. Because most kids like to visit amusement park, if I were to put kohlrabi as a theme of the park, people will be able to approach to it easily. They will gain more knowledge of this vegetable with positive view on it. Although I was very attracted to this idea, I thought showing this in a poster wouldn’t be enough to attract people. Then I stuck with my first idea, which I started up with a notion of ‘vegetable apocalypse.’ Like I mentioned above, kids are afraid of vegetable, especially, kohlrabi, because it is unfamiliar. Even many other adults are not familiar with it. So my intentions with the poster was to make the audience be curious of what kohlrabi is by appealing it with very well known movies. I guess it could be called ‘inside joke,’ because people will only get this if you know the movie or have seen the original poster. Although I thought about having to make the poster to have a theme of ‘vegetable apocalypse’ I thought that it might bring in negative perspective, so I thought I should not limit to what kids would think regarding to this poster. I wanted to focus on how they will be reminded on the movie and be familiar with the new version of the poster, which brings in their interest.
I found this assignment quite difficult, because I wasn’t familiar with this vegetable and I am not used to making any humourous medias in English. Humour code in Korea and Canada is fairly different, so I had trouble in finding what people will think is humourous. While doing this project, I began to think about what would bring positive or negative perception, which forced me to rethink about my ideas and be critical with it.
The Secret Life of American Doll
Dolls have been common toy for all ages, which has evolved and impacted people’s social interaction with each other. There have been a variety of developments of dolls that have been changed over the years. The form of dolls also changed from an object of play to strategy of marketing. The paper doll was first introduced in advertising, magazines and newspapers that covered numerous subject areas and time periods. The invention of paper dolls was first used by adults as puppets to “satirize the noble classes” and did not require removable outfits (Oatman-Stanford). However, it has developed as a children’s toy to enhance their creativity. Children were not only playing, but also learned and developed their artistic skill at the same time.
As time passed and technology grew, the paper doll was constantly being replaced. In the 20th century, plastic dolls, such as the American Girl were introduced to the market. Unlike the traditional 2D paper doll, the American Girl is made out of “huggable cloth body, eyes that open and close, hair that can be styled, and a movable head and limbs made of smooth vinyl” (American Girl Co.). Although the American Girl seems to be more enjoyable to play with, it has lost the crafting aspect of the paper doll. Because the American Girl set their physical standards and background stories of each doll, children lost their imagination to create and design their own dolls, Furthermore the American Girl’s company provides a hospital, a salon and etc for dolls as if they are actual human beings. Instead of going shopping with friends, children can shop with their dolls which eventually takes away the human social interaction. To some people, this might be an interesting experience, but from a critical perspective, this is another method of marketing.
Having to believe that this process continues, our group developed the concept of a futuristic hologram American Girl, where the children can have an actual conversation with dolls. With the hologram American Girl, one would not need to have a real life friend anymore, since the hologram doll will always be there. Fortunately, the hologram doll is not available to purchase yet. Then what if the hologram doll becomes a reality? With the existing 3D projectors, a programmed character can stand in the space like a real person. We are not far away from having an actual 3D projected hologram doll that can play and chat with us at home. Indeed that technology has brought new ways of playing, but we need to consider the consequences and be aware of our actions, or else we can end up wasting our hours with a projected character instead of connecting with families and friends.
